The property
This is not a city apartment but a country one: an independent guesthouse in an arcaded wing, or barchessa, of Ca'Marcello at Levada di Piombino Dese, in the Veneto countryside. The villa was built in the second half of the 16th century by the Marcello, one of Venice's most powerful families, and has belonged to them ever since. Guests can visit the main house, with its frescoes and objets d'art.
The bedroom windows look over an Italianate garden with a fountain and statues; beyond lie parkland with fine trees, a chapel, a dovecote and woods. A garden near the house is reserved for guests, with an al fresco dining area and barbecue among roses, oleanders and hydrangeas, and a kitchen garden where you may pick vegetables, herbs and grapes.
Restored and partly refurnished in 2004, the apartment has original marble plaster walls, parquet floors, decorated ceilings and bathrooms with hand-painted Vietri tiles. There are four bedrooms over two floors, a large living room with bar, a dining room, two sitting rooms and a pool room.
The Marcello family are friendly and discreet and can arrange dinners in the garden, wine tastings, and tours to Padua, Asolo, Venice and beyond. It suits families or friends who want to explore the Veneto from a villa base.
