The apartment
Palazzo Loredan dell'Ambasciatore is a 15th-century Gothic palazzo in Dorsoduro, birthplace of two Doges of Venice and still owned by the family who restored this first-floor apartment over two years. It stands on the Grand Canal opposite Palazzo Grassi, between the Accademia Bridge and Ca' Rezzonico, with views from the volta del canal at Ca' Foscari to the Accademia and beyond.
Arrivals and outings can be by water taxi from the palazzo's own water entrance. Inside, the formal salone has Venetian terrazzo floors, a lofty beamed ceiling, 18th-century gilded sconces and Murano chandeliers, and Gothic windows opening onto a long marble balcony over the canal. Antiques from the 17th to the 19th century sit alongside pieces made for the palazzo, with Fortuny fabrics and Zoffany and Brunschwig wallpapers.
The dining room seats twelve facing the Grand Canal, and a breakfast room adjoins a kitchen with brushed oak units, black marble worktops, a Viking range and an original 15th-century fireplace. At the back, a sitting room looks over a leafy west-facing garden.
